Agassiz, L. Contributions to the Natural History of the United States of America. 4 vols. Boston Little, Brown & Co. 1857-1862 4°, All four volumes rebound. Inside clean. Marginal water damage in volume 3. The first two volumes are the ones of herpetolgical interest. These volumes contain Essay on Classification, North American Testudinata, and Embryology of the Turtle. The 34 plates in volume II are of turtles and turtle embryology. Most of these, as well as most of the plates in volumes 3 & 4, were drawn on stone by Auguste Sonrel. After Agasszi emigrated to the United States he found that he needed an illustrator that could meet his strict criteria and put up with his criticisms. Sonrel emigrated to the United states in the fall of 1848 and was more than satisfactory to Agassiz. Sonrel's lithographs are, in my opinion, among the most detailed zoological lithographs ever produced. many of the juvenile turtles in this volume are stunningly accurate and detailed. Having tried stone lithography myself, Sonrel's illustrations are all the more admirable. Many of his techniques appear to be unknown to today's stone lithographers. Price:
